Teacher's tips

Level of education: Elementary School I - Early Childhood Education

Age: 04 to 06 years old

The identification of geometric shapes makes room for a series of knowledge that trace the path of abstract logical thinking. Challenges that require attention, action and reflection form the ideal way for students to learn the properties and names of geometric figures. Contact with figures should begin in the early years of early childhood education, when children begin to recognize patterns, classify, compare. This simple and very fun animation will allow the child to learn while playing! Thus, they should be stimulated through exposure to various types of shapes, sizes and different colors, so that they observe what they have in common and how they differ. [FIM-DICA]

Suggestions of approaches for the teacher

(Suggestion 1) The game can be proposed individually or in pairs. When playing in pairs, children must take turns to fit the pieces into each drawing. In the same drawing, sometimes a child fits one piece, sometimes the other.

(Suggestion 2) It is important to ask them to report the names of each figure, when they manage to put it in place, and also what its color is. At that moment there will be a rich exchange of ideas and information between the members of the pairs.

(Suggestion 3) Another suggestion is that, while a colleague completes the drawing, the other registers on a sheet of paper the geometric shape that was placed in place (using drawing and words) and also its color. Then they switch roles.

(Suggestion 4) This record can be used as one more way to systematize the content “geometric figures” and also as an instrument for the development of writing and reading.

(Suggestion 5) TANGRAM is a great ally, a game often used by math teachers to introduce students from Kindergarten and Elementary School I, to geometric shapes. It is a didactic tool used to work on logic and creativity, lines, line segments, points and vertices.

Use it in your activities to work with geometric figures.

(Suggestion 6) While working with geometric figures, encourage students to look around for objects that have the same shapes as the geometric figures presented in the activity.

(Suggestion 7) Make cutouts in magazines assembling geometric shapes;

(Suggestion 8) Draw shapes using objects, such as: circles using cups, squares using milk cartons, etc.

(Suggestion 9) Make a collage of grains inside the geometric shapes.

(Suggestion 10) Cut sponges to make stamps. Use these shapes by wetting them in paint and marking them on the cardboard.

(Suggestion 11) Build a panel of geometric shapes.

More about the content

It is important to provide the child with the visualization, exploration, contact and handling of various objects that make up the universe of colors and shapes, enabling the child to identify them. Through online games, students will come into contact with information technology in a playful and pleasurable way, where the apprehension of knowledge related to this knowledge as the name of the parts that make up the computer, its operating logic, language and terminologies related to it, control of peripherals like mouse, keyboard, etc.
