Teacher's tips

Level of Education: Preschool

Subject: Mathematics

Theme: Logical sequence

Age: 06 to 08 years old

Sequencing is an ability that allows us to divide an event into simple and organized steps. These skills help us talk about past events logically so others can follow the story. We also need them to perform tasks that require the steps to be in a specific order. [FIM-DICA]

Learner outcomes

To make associations;

To recognize patterns;

To improve attention, memory performance, and logical thinking;

To acquire motor coordination and a sense of perception

To develop different thinking skills such as: observing, comparing, analyzing, and synthesizing;

To exercise memory and concentration in the process of identifying and comparing images.

Teachers' goals

To provide an environment of free imagination and creativity;

To offer, playfully and dynamically, resources that instigate children to perceive similarities and differences;

To support students develop their reasoning ability;

To enable integration between different areas of knowledge;

To help the development of different strategies for approaching reality either through comparison;

Suggestions of approaches for the teacher

(Approach 1) Place two photos in front of students and ask them to identify which event happened first.

((Approach 2) To work with the discrimination of figures, print on a sheet several scrambled animals, and put some facing to the right and some to the left. Tell students which ones are correct: the ones facing right or left. Then ask them to paint the incorrect animals.

(Approach 3) Prepare logical cards with all the alphabet letters and ask students to put them in order.

(Approach 4) Make cards with numbers from 0 to 20 and ask students to order them.

(Approach 5) Play domino games

(Approach 6) Elaborate a logical sequence using colors or geometric shapes.

(Approach 7) Play "spot the differences" games.

(Approach 8) Assemble puzzles.

(Approach 9) Use building blocks to create shapes and objects.

(Approach 10) Align toys or associate them by size, shape, or color, separating them into groups. Take students' favorite toys and choose a criterion to separate them: oldest to youngest, smallest to largest, etc.

(Approach 11) Give students colored beads and ask them to rank based on their sizes. Ask them to put larger beads in one box and the smaller ones in another. Then repeat the activity by changing pairs to color criteria.

(Approach 12) Play with mimics.

(Approach 13) Scramble a children's story and ask them to retell it in the correct sequence.

More about the content

Logical thinking involves reasoning and using prior knowledge to reach conclusions. This skill requires an understanding of attributes, relationships, and sequences and is not only important for formal learning but is an essential skill for life.

Activities that use logical sequences are essential because they:

● Allow children to recognize patterns and make predictions;

● Teach children to organize a series of objects or events in a logical order;

● Help children understand transitional words such as “first,” “next,” and “last.”

● Teach kids about the elements of a story, such as the beginning, middle, and end.;

● Helps children understand stories and retell past events

● Allow children to put words and sounds in the correct order to communicate

● Promote the development of daily routines at home and school;

● Logically address unfamiliar tasks;

● Allow children to identify when a task is completed.

Activities involving logical reasoning must be progressively more challenging, adding new elements whenever objectives are achieved.
