Teacher's tips

Level of Education: Elementary school

Subject: Mathematics

Grade: 1st Year

Age: 03 to 07 years old

Online games are excellent options to make the class more interesting, offering a more interactive experience, developing many skills and competencies, and leading to more meaningful learning.

Start encouraging students to play the game by telling them the importance of eating healthy and emphasizing that fruits and vegetables are essential for good health. Then introduce the board game and read the instructions reinforcing that they can play alone or in pairs. Tell students to be patient as they choose the cards and move forward in the game, and also tell them that when they fall into a “Quiz” house, they will have a question to answer. [FIM-DICA]

Learner outcomes

  • To become aware of the need for good nutrition and practice of hygiene habits to preserve health;
  • To learn Mathematics playfully through online games and everyday games to get out of repetitive classes;
  • To reinforce the content discussed in the classroom;
  • To develop skills and competencies, as well as logical reasoning, motor coordination, and visual perception;
  • To participate in practical classes to sharpen curiosity and stimulate creativity to develop critical thinking skills;
  • To research hygiene and plant care habits;
  • To contribute to the creation of a community garden in the school space;
  • To discuss, during classes, the occurrence of nutritional disorders (such as obesity, malnutrition, etc.) among children and young people based on the analysis of their habits (types and amount of food eaten, physical activity, etc.);
  • To experience different circumstances and deal better with everyday issues.

Teachers’ goals

  • To better understand the concepts aimed at digital games, as well as the role of board games in the teaching of mathematics and other contents;
  • To introduce children to the food pyramid;
  • To hold lectures about the theme to make children aware of the importance of healthy eating and hygiene habits;
  • To show students that a lack of healthy eating can lead to malnutrition and eating disorders;
  • To invest in playful, more meaningful, and interactive activities that allow teachers to create new learning strategies.

Suggestions of approaches for the teacher

  • Nothing more motivating than working with song lyrics to introduce content! Many songs address this topic. Choose one to elaborate a choreography with the younger children and characterize them as fruits or vegetables. By moving their bodies, they will develop flexibility, exercise motor coordination, enhance their sense of space, cooperation, and a significant improvement aimed at social integration.

  • Plan a day to take students to the kitchen and make a “fruit salad.” Ask them to bring fruits they like to make it a fun cooking class. As they interact, take the opportunity to explain to them the importance of fruits in our lives, including hygiene habits to make everyone aware of the care to preserve food and our health.

  • Invite the Science teacher to lecture and expose the importance of fruits and vegetables in children's diet.

  • The mathematics teacher can insert fruits and vegetables into the activities with the four operations. Elaborate problems in which children can perform logical reasoning around this context.

Examples: Mariana won a box with 20 oranges, gave 5 to her best friend and 5 to the teacher. How many oranges did she get? In Julio's basket, there are 15 mangoes. He gave 5 to his father and 5 to his mother. How many are left in the basket? I have 25 strawberries. I'll keep five and give the others to 4 children. How many will I give each one? They should have the same amount.

  • Play the “Fruit Shadow Game.” It aims at visual perceptual-cognitive development, stimulates the brain, and leads children to the classification of fruits with their biological characteristics.

  • Schools should encourage children and adolescents to seek healthy eating. For this to become a reality, create a vegetable garden in a suitable space for the school. Children will love getting their hands dirty and planting fruit or vegetable seedlings. Parents can also participate in this activity.

More about the content

  • To make classes more dynamic and complement the content, how about planning a project on healthy eating?
  • Students, first, will research the subject, take notes and ask questions.
  • Set goals and divide them into teams. Suggest research on foods that are not beneficial and those that favor good health.
  • Then, ask children to make posters and distribute them throughout the school corridors.
  • They can also make puppets with recycled material and present narratives giving life to the characters. Use a cardboard or shoe box to build a stage for the presentation of the stick puppets.
  • 5th-graders can research healthy foods and develop menus and strategies to solve problems related to inadequate nutrition. Then, ask them to write texts that lead to reflection and conclusions. Present statistical data, tables, and graphs to reinforce the message they aim to convey to readers.
  • Introduce students of all grades to the food pyramid, as it consists of a graph that systematizes food according to its functions and nutrients. Older children can produce their pyramid, prioritizing the foods they like and that are healthy.
  • An engaging survey for fifth-grade students would be about the forms of transmission of some microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, and protozoa), attitudes, and appropriate measures to prevent associated diseases. Nutritional disorders are also a good topic to research and discuss to raise students' awareness.
